Luis Diaz Bio
Luis Diaz joined Liverpool on a long-term contract in January 2022 and took up the No.23 shirt. He arrived at Anfield as one of the most exciting and accomplished attackers in European football, following a two-and-a-half-year spell with FC Porto during which his reputation rose exponentially. Luis had first come to prominence in his home country, representing Barranquilla FC and then Junior, with whom he lifted the Copa Colombia and was a key figure as they won two league titles and finished runners-up in the Copa Sudamericana. Diaz’s exploits had attracted the attention of European clubs and Porto swooped in to sign the right-footer on a permanent deal in the summer of 2019. Once again, the attacker’s development accelerated and he struck 14 goals during his debut season with the Dragons as they achieved a domestic double of Primeira Liga and Portuguese cup. Eleven more goals followed in the next season and Luis subsequently shone on the grand stage of the Copa America, ending the 2021 edition as joint-top scorer with four and named in the Team of the Tournament as Colombia finished third. Diaz’s stunning performances continued into the 2021-22 campaign and before his switch to Liverpool he had netted 14 times in 18 league games for Porto, as well as two more during a Champions League group phase in which he faced the Reds twice. In all, his statistics at Porto showed 60 goal contributions – 41 goals and 19 assists – in 125 appearances. Liverpool had seen enough to make their move and completed an agreement to bring Luis to Merseyside shortly before the January trasfer deadline. Diaz made his debut for the club on February 6, 2022 and marked it with an assist in an FA Cup victory over Cardiff City at Anfield. The Reds went on to lift two trophies with Diaz playing a key role in both triumphs during the first months of his career on Merseyside. First, Liverpool claimed the Carabao Cup as the Colombian scored in the 11-10 penalty shootout victory over Chelsea at Wembley. Diaz then featured against the Blues in the FA Cup final in May - again at the national stadium - as Klopp's side got the better of Thomas Tuchel's men on penalties for a second time. He also helped Liverpool to finish runners-up in the 2021-22 Champions League. |
