Liverpool v Luton Town - The First League Cup Game

Match Report

It was almost soley due to their Irish goalkeeper Mike O'Hara, only 16 in August, that Luton could survive through a last-minute goal in this Football League Cup 2nd round tie which only attracted 10,502 spectators to Anfield.

Despite the solid defensive work of centre-half John Groves, who kept a tight hold on Dave Hickson, the assertive Liverpool forwards repeatedly called young O'Hara into action. Fortune was with him when Jimmy Harrower and Alan A'Court both hit the woodwork.

Liverpool took the lead on 25 minutes. Tommy Leishman, the reds left-half, was allowed to race through unchallenged for 30 yards. His rising 20-yard shot beat O'Hara completely.

But in the final seconds of the match David Brogan , Luton Towns young Scottish inside-left, making his first senior appearance, headed a Alan Brown inches wide of Bert Slater.

The match finished all square but Liverpool went on to win the replay 5-2 at Kenilworth Road 5 days later.
