Liverpool FC Hall of Fame John Barnes

John Barnes was born in Kingston, Jamaica on 7 November 1963, the son of an army officer and a TV presenter.

Former footballer, John Barnes went to school in England and played for Sudbury Court before joining Watford in 1981.

Barnes was at Watford at the time of their rise from nowhere to be a football force.

In 1987 he was transferred to Liverpool for a transfer fee of £900,000. Whilst Barnes was at Liverpool their trophies included the League Championship (the equivalent of the modern day Premiership) in 1988 and 1990.

After leaving Liverpool, John Barnes had short spells at Newcastle and Charlton.

John Barnes made 78 appearances for England, for whom he scored 11 goals.

Off the pitch he was the main voice in the England squad's Italia '90 song World in Motion, which they recorded with New Order.

John Barnes joined his old colleague Kenny Dalglish at Celtic to become head coach, but it did not go well and John Barnes was sacked as manager of Celtic in 2000.

Since then, John Barnes has concentrated on his TV punditry and presenting career and he has worked on a host of football programmes on ITV and Channel Five.

John Barnes was awarded an MBE in 1998.

In Strictly Come Dancing, John Barnes partnered Nicole Cutler.

Although John Barnes slimmed down and improved as the series went on, he was nevertheless eliminated in week 8 of Strictly Come Dancing in 2007.

In December 2007, it was announced that John Barnes had been appointed a part-time Caribbean scout for Roy Keane's Sunderland.

In September 2008, the Jamaica Football Federation appointed John Barnes the new national coach of Jamaica, however he left the post in July 2009.

John Barnes was appointed manager of Tranmere Rovers in the 2009/10 season however he was sacked after Tranmere had secured just two league wins from 11 matches.
